Verbs Followed by an Infinitive

Многие английские глаголы, когда за ними идёт другой глагол, требуют to-инфинитив — форму to + базовый глагол (to go, to leave, to know).

I want to go home.
She decided to leave early.
They hope to buy a house next year.
We can't afford to waste time.

want, hope, plan, intend, expect, wish, decide, choose, aim

Daniel wants to become a doctor.
I hope to finish the report by Friday.
Maria plans to move to Berlin in spring.
We intend to open a second office.
She chose to stay silent during the meeting.

agree, refuse, promise, offer, consent, volunteer

He agreed to sign the contract.
Sarah refused to answer the question.
James promised to call his mother on Sunday.
A colleague offered to drive me to the airport.
Several students volunteered to organise the event.

try, manage, attempt, fail, struggle, afford, learn

I tried to fix the printer myself.
She managed to catch the last train.
The company failed to meet its targets.
Tom is struggling to understand the new system.
We can't afford to buy a new car this year.

seem, appear, happen, tend

Anna seems to know everyone in the room.
The house appears to be empty.
I happened to meet him at the conference.
Older buildings tend to have thicker walls.

The baby began to cry.
It started to rain around noon.
She continued to work late into the evening.

tell, ask, invite, advise, allow, remind, warn, want, expect, encourage, order, teach

I asked him to wait outside.
They invited us to stay for dinner.
The doctor advised her to rest.
My parents expect me to visit every weekend.
The teacher reminded the students to bring their notebooks.
Security warned passengers to stay behind the line.

I want to leave. (I am leaving.)
I want you to leave. (You are leaving.)
She expects to arrive by six. (She is arriving.)
She expects them to arrive by six. (They are arriving.)

Дополнение обычно — человек или местоимение, и требуется объектная форма местоимения: me, him, her, us, them — никогда I, he, she, we, they.

I decided not to go to the party.
She asked him not to leave so early.
We promised not to tell anyone.
The doctor advised her not to drink coffee in the evening.

Постановка not после to (to not go) иногда встречается в неформальной речи, но звучит коряво, и её следует избегать в стандартном письме.
