Adverbs vs Adjectives

Adjectives (прилагательные) описывают существительные — они говорят, чем что-то является. Adverbs (наречия) описывают глаголы, прилагательные или другие наречия — они говорят, как что-то происходит или в какой степени.

She is a careful driver. (adjective — describes the noun driver)
She drives carefully. (adverb — describes the verb drives)

Одно и то же корневое слово часто выступает в обеих ролях. Ключ всегда один и тот же: смотрите, что именно описывается.

Правило выбора

После action verb (глагола действия) используйте наречие. После linking verb (глагола-связки) используйте прилагательное.

Глаголы действия описывают, что кто-то делает: run, speak, write, sing. Глаголы-связки описывают, чем кто-то является или кажется: be, seem, become, appear.

James spoke quietly. (action verb spoke — adverb)
James seems quiet. (linking verb seems — adjective)

Глаголы восприятия — look, feel, sound, taste, smell — это глаголы-связки, когда описывают сам субъект.

The soup tastes delicious. (linking — describes the soup)
This fabric feels soft. (linking — describes the fabric)
The music sounds strange. (linking — describes the music)

Практический тест: замените глагол на форму be. Если предложение остаётся осмысленным, глагол — связка и требует прилагательного. The soup is delicious — работает. Значит, tastes здесь — связка.

Ловушка глагола-связки

Некоторые глаголы переключаются между действием и связкой в зависимости от смысла. Одно и то же предложение с прилагательным или с наречием описывает две разные вещи.

Look

She looked careful at the contract. — wrong
She looked carefully at the contract. (action — how she looked)
She looked tired after the flight. (linking — describes her)

Feel

He felt the fabric carefully. (action — he touched it with care)
He felt nervous before the interview. (linking — describes his state)

Taste

She tasted the sauce slowly. (action — she sampled it)
The sauce tasted perfect. (linking — describes the sauce)

Smell

The dog smelled the bag suspiciously. (action — the dog sniffed)
The bread smelled wonderful. (linking — describes the bread)

В каждой паре значение действия требует наречия, а значение связки — прилагательного. Контекст всегда делает разницу очевидной.

Good vs well

Это самая частая путаница «прилагательное-наречие» в английском.

Good — прилагательное. Well — его наречная пара.

Anna is a good pianist. (adjective — describes pianist)
Anna plays well. (adverb — describes how she plays)

После глагола-связки используйте good — оно описывает субъект, а не действие.

The presentation looks good.
That idea sounds good.

Есть одно исключение: well также является прилагательным, когда означает здоровый.

I don't feel well today. (= I feel unwell / not healthy)
She looks well after the treatment. (= she looks healthy)

И I feel good, и I feel well верны, но значат слегка разное. I feel good — о настроении или общем состоянии. I feel well — конкретно о здоровье.

Flat adverbs

Некоторые слова работают и как прилагательное, и как наречие без добавления -ly. Их называют flat adverbs.

СЛОВОПРИЛАГАТЕЛЬНОЕНАРЕЧИЕ
fasta fast trainshe runs fast
harda hard questionhe works hard
earlyan early flightthey arrived early
latea late replythe bus came late
straighta straight linedrive straight ahead
wrongthe wrong answeryou spelled it wrong
rightthe right directionturn right at the corner
dailya daily routinethe shop opens daily

Это не ошибки и не неформальные сокращения. Это стандартный английский. Добавление -ly к некоторым из них либо звучит неестественно (fastly не существует), либо полностью меняет смысл.

Когда -ly меняет смысл

У нескольких распространённых слов есть и форма flat adverb, и отдельная форма с -ly — но они значат разное.

hard / hardly

Sarah studied hard for the exam. (= with a lot of effort)
Sarah hardly studied for the exam. (= almost not at all)

late / lately

Daniel arrived late to the meeting. (= not on time)
Daniel has been busy lately. (= recently)

near / nearly

The hotel is near the station. (= close to)
The project is nearly finished. (= almost)

free / freely

Children travel free on this bus. (= without paying)
People can speak freely in a democracy. (= without restriction)

high / highly

The kite flew high above the trees. (= at a great height)
The restaurant is highly recommended. (= to a great degree, very much)

deep / deeply

The divers went deep into the cave. (= far down)
The film deeply affected the audience. (= emotionally, profoundly)

wide / widely

Open the door wide. (= to full extent)
The book is widely read across Europe. (= by many people, in many places)

В каждой паре flat-форма сохраняет конкретное, физическое значение, а форма с -ly смещается к абстрактному или переносному.
